Giving Up Control

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.
—Proverbs 6:19
Many times in my life, I have struggled when things didn’t go the way I expected. Injustices, rejections and losses can leave us with feelings of grief, hurt or anger. We may have worked very hard for a job, been a faithful friend, or checked all the boxes in a situation—only for things to go south on us.
A verse I have come to lean on in these situations comes from Proverbs. Verse 6:19 says, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.”
I remind myself that I am limited in my ability to perceive all the parts of my story, while God holds all of it in His hands. The peace that can be experienced in that surrender is profound. As humans, we have a false sense of being in control of things, but ultimately we have very little control. Remembering and accepting that God has the final say in all things helps me to exchange my grief for peace, that only HE can provide!

Personal Reflection:
Where are you struggling to give up control, but need to? How can relying on God’s strength rather than your own help you move forward?
Daily Action:
Identify small, non-critical areas of your life where you can practice letting go of control. This could be delegating tasks or not micromanaging every aspect of a project. Take the next few days to practice this.
