Renewal With a Blanket of Snow

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
—2 Corinthians 5:7
Sometimes in our busy lives it is important to step away to find peace, tranquility, and time to reflect on what is really important. I think everyone has a special place or a memory of a special time where they have found tranquility and have felt the presence of God. I am sure that like me, many of you have experienced tranquility and found inner peace while immersed in the natural beauty that God has created.
I often remember getting up early after a winter snowstorm to be among the first to get to the top of Brundage Mountain in Idaho as the sun was rising on a thick blanket of fresh powder that hung over the trees hiding the individual branches and connecting them to the snow below. This blanket of powder also covered up all of the footprints and ski tracks left the previous days, providing renewal of beauty, fresh hope, and forgiveness of the previous day’s mistakes, falls, and craters left in the snow.
As the crisp air filled my lungs and I gazed at the breathtaking panorama, there was a feeling of profound peace, tranquility, and connection to something much bigger than myself. After a while, I would push forward and cut the first powder tracks of the day, full of exhilaration and renewal. The only sound now was the sound of my skis cutting new tracks through the snow. Any fear I may have had was replaced with inner peace and confidence. Somehow, I had become one with that natural beauty and I knew that whatever happened and whatever mistakes I would make could be forgiven and covered with a new blanket of snow.
